“The more we get what we now call ‘ourselves’ out of the way and let Him take us over, the more truly ourselves we become.” — C.S. Lewis
Lewis’s paradox challenges the cultural mantra of self-discovery through unchecked freedom. As a young adult, you’re told to “find yourself” by breaking all boundaries—geographic, moral, or relational. But Lewis suggests that true identity emerges not in limitless indulgence but in submitting to God’s boundaries, which shape you into who you were created to be.
This can feel restrictive when the world equates freedom with doing whatever you want. Yet, consider how limits—like discipline in study or fidelity in relationships—bring clarity and purpose. God’s commands aren’t shackles but guardrails, guiding you toward a life of meaning. By letting Him lead, you shed the false selves the world imposes and discover your true self in Christ.
Reflect on where you’re resisting God’s boundaries, whether in time, money, or desires. Surrender these to Him, trusting that His limits are the path to freedom. As you align with His will, you’ll find a self worth knowing. Never forget—you are loved and you are not alone.
